Chypre (French for Cyprus) is one of the great perfume families, codified by François Coty's Chypre in 1917. The structure bergamot top, floral heart, labdanum-oakmoss-patchouli base is the backbone of legendary perfumes like Mitsouko, Femme and Aromatics Elixir. With modern oakmoss restrictions, building a contemporary chypre is one of the most respected exercises in perfume formulation.

Why do classic chypres smell so different now?
Most have been reformulated due to oakmoss restrictions since the 2000s. The Mitsouko of 1919 contained levels of oakmoss that are no longer legal modern reformulations approximate the structure with substitutes.
Is chypre a masculine or feminine family?
Both. Classic chypres like Mitsouko are coded feminine, while leather chypres like Bandit and Aramis lean masculine. The structure itself is gender neutral the floral heart can dial it in either direction.
