Short profile

Karanal centres on an intensely diffusive amber character, with pronounced dryness and substantial woody body. Mahogany-like shading, dustiness, resin and earth give the profile texture, while a floral accent and an occasional watermelon-like impression add nuance. The supplier also describes cedar traces and a metallic, mineral aspect to its radiance. Its character is notably persistent on a blotter, with descriptions ranging from weeks to months; however, the page does not distinguish separate opening, heart and dry-down profiles.

Effect in a formula

Karanal builds a strongly projecting amber foundation and increases the volume of woody structures. At restrained dosage it contributes lasting support, whereas excess can overwhelm the other components. Its stated applications include woody-amber bases, contemporary masculine compositions, soaps and detergents.

Use and dosage

The supplier gives 0.1–1% of the fragrance concentrate as a typical range, particularly for woody-amber and masculine structures. Keep additions restrained: excessive loading can dominate the blend and accentuate metallic character. A separate recommendation of 0.01–0.3% refers to the finished fragrance, not the concentrate. These are formulation guidelines, not IFRA limits.

Behaviour and performance

Tenacity
The page reports 400 hours of blotter substantivity in its TGSC-attributed data. Elsewhere, supplier commentary describes persistence over weeks and even months; no test dilution or other experimental conditions are specified.

Diffusion, tenacity and note impact are not combined into a single performance score.

Dissolving and diluting

Solvents
Clear solutions are reported with ethanol, DPG and IPM. The supplier cautions that acidic media can promote hydrolysis of this acetal.
Working dilution
For routine formulation work, the supplier recommends a 1% solution, reducing to 0.1% for olfactory evaluation. Ethanol is the highlighted dilution solvent; DPG and IPM are also listed as suitable solvents.
Appearance
A viscous liquid, ranging in colour from colourless to a faint yellow.
Practical tip: Assess trials across several days rather than relying on the initial hours of evaluation. Use a dedicated pipette and keep the material stored separately, as advised by the supplier. Make small dosage adjustments to avoid an excessively metallic, dominating result.
