Short profile

An assertive thyme odour combines penetrating herbal character with hot spice and a pronounced phenolic, medicinal edge. Its texture is rough and forceful rather than rounded, with a darker character than white thyme oil. Culinary-herb associations sit alongside disinfectant-like nuances, while the supplier also describes a suggestion of smoke. No timed blotter observations are supplied to distinguish the opening, heart and dry-down.

Effect in a formula

Provides a conspicuous herbal accent and a spicy bite that strengthens lavender-led fougères and aromatic masculine compositions. In chypres, its dry medicinal character offers contrast to sweetness. The supplier also identifies herbal and leather accords as applications.

Use and dosage

For fine-fragrance concentrates, the supplier gives 0.05–0.3% and recommends restrained dosing. A separate laboratory section quotes 0.1–2% in the finished fragrance; this has a different stated basis and should not be treated as a concentrate range. These are formulation suggestions, not IFRA limits.

Dissolving and diluting

Solvents
Reported to form clear solutions with ethanol, DPG and IPM. Clarity does not imply a colourless solution: the oil contributes a reddish tint.
Working dilution
A 10% ethanol solution is specified for evaluation and working use. The laboratory guidance additionally recommends 1% for smelling this powerful material, although it does not explicitly assign a solvent to that lower dilution.
Appearance
Liquid with an amber to reddish-brown colour; the handling section describes it specifically as reddish brown.
Practical tip: Allow for reddish colour transfer when developing pale products; the supplier proposes white thyme oil where colour is critical. Store away from light at a cool temperature, keeping containers well filled.
