Vetiver Java Essential Oil

Short profile
A forceful vetiver with smoke, earth and woody roots at its centre, darker in character than the Haitian oil. Its dry, dust-like texture is complemented by damp-soil nuances, grapefruit peel and subtle leather and nutty accents. The emphasis is on a persistent base rather than a documented opening-to-heart progression; the supplier does not quantify projection. Evaluation of a 10% dilution on a strip over several hours is recommended to reveal its persistence, although no timed sequence of odour changes is supplied.
Effect in a formula
Provides a substantial, dark base with root, earth and smoke character while contributing natural fixation. It is particularly suited to chypre, woody and oriental compositions, with further applications in vetiver and leather accords. In masculine citrus constructions, it supplies an earthy counterweight beneath the citrus material.
Use and dosage
The recommended-use section gives 1–10% of the fragrance concentrate as a typical range, with substantially higher proportions possible when vetiver is the principal theme. A separate laboratory section assigns 1–10% to the finished fragrance, so the page is inconsistent about the dosage basis. These are formulation recommendations, not IFRA limits.

Behaviour and performance
- Tenacity
- Described as a highly persistent base material lasting many hours to days. The supplier recommends assessing a 10% dilution on a blotter after several hours, but provides no measured blotter endpoint or defined test conditions.
Diffusion, tenacity and note impact are not combined into a single performance score.
Dissolving and diluting
- Solvents
- Clear solutions are reported in ethanol, dipropylene glycol (DPG) and isopropyl myristate (IPM). Water-containing alcohol systems can become cloudy.
- Working dilution
- For compounding, work either with the undiluted oil or a 10% dilution. Use 10% for olfactory evaluation; ethanol is the solvent selected in the supplier's linked dilution calculator, while DPG and IPM are also listed as compatible solvents.
- Appearance
- A thick, viscous oil whose colour ranges from amber to brown.
